Periodic cleaning out, by Direct SupportMaintenance personnel, of residue and sludge providesfor a more efficient operation of the Asphalt Melter; andwhen moving the melter to a new worksite, reduces theoverall weight.b. Effort required to clean out the asphalt meltercan be held to a minimum by draining all asphaltmaterial, when hot, before unit is shut down. Removethe rear drain cap (10, Figure 4-1) to drain the storagetank. Dispose of drained residue in accordance withlocal safety regulations.WARNINGALLOW UNIT TO COOL TO AMBIENTTEMPERATURE BEFORE STARTINGCLEANING OPERATIONS ORDISMANTLING OF UNIT. UNITOPERATES AT 235°F, SEVEREBURNS MAY RESULT IF CONTACT ISMADE WITH UNIT.c. Before beginning clean out procedures, the unitmust be partially dismantled to gain access to thestorage tank (see paragraph 4-3). Do not disassemblethe melter farther than needed. To properly cleanstorage tank the storage tank heating coil (4, Figure 4-1)must be removed.WARNING• TUNNEL MUST BE REMOVED AMINIMUM OF 24 HOURS PRIORTO ENTRY INTO STORAGETANK. CHEMICAL CONTAMI-NANTS MAY BE PRESENT ANDMAY CAUSE SICKNESS ORIRRITATION.• CHECK WITH LOCAL SAFETYOFFICE FOR CONFINED SPACEENTRY REQUIREMENTS.• DRY CLEANING SOLVENT (P-D680) IS TOXIC AND FLAMMA-BLE. WEAR PERSONAL PROTEC-TIVE EQUIPMENT, TO INCLUDENITRILE RUBBER GLOVES/APRONS AND A FULL FACESHIELD; USE ONLY IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA; AVOID CON-TACT WITH SKIN, EYES, ANDCLOTHES AND DO NOT BREATHEVAPORS. KEEP AWAY FROMHEAT OR FLAME. NEVER SMOKEWHEN USING SOLVENT. (FLASHPOINT FOR TYPE III SOLVENT IS2000F.) FAILURE TO DO SO MAYRESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH TOPERSONNEL. REFER TO WAR-NINGS PAGE B FOR MOREINFORMATION.d. Clean walls and floor of storage tank and tunnelsupport beams by scraping.e. The asphalt flexible hose and disconnectcouplings (Figure 2-6) may be cleaned by soaking in atrough filled with approved cleaning solvent.f. Allow the unit to thoroughly air dry beforeattempting to reassemble the melter.4-2.Lubrication Instructions.Lubricate the asphalt melter monthly as follows:a. Apply a drop of SAE 10 grade oil (MIL-L-2104E)to the bushings of the door winches.b. Use a clean rag to apply oil (Lubriplate, Bar andChain Oil 10-R, or equivalent) to the load chain.4-3.Maintenance Instructions.a. The asphalt melter, is designed andconstructed, to be virtually maintenance free.
